While a solution like Panaya can greatly streamline the overall upgrade process, a good tool by itself will rarely have the desired impact unless an accompanying set of best practices are implemented alongside the tool. Indeed, implementation failure generally takes place in the absence of any direct technical problem with the software. In virtually every case of implementation failure that EAC has analyzed, the failure could be traced directly to the people in charge - be they in the internal IT department, or employed by an outside systems integrator - and to the processes and best practices they either implemented poorly or failed to implement at all.

While the tendency is to view upgrades as a necessary evil in the enterprise software market, the reality is that upgrades can be an important part of a company's overall competitive profile.
